Do I need a plug adapter when travelling from the US to the UK?
Yes. The US uses Type A and B plugs (120V, 60Hz) while the UK uses Type G plugs (230V, 50Hz). You will need both a plug adapter and a voltage converter for most US devices.
What is the difference between a plug adapter and a voltage converter?
A plug adapter only changes the shape of the plug so it fits a foreign socket. A voltage converter changes the electrical voltage. If your destination uses a different voltage, you may need a converter to avoid damaging your devices. Check your device label for "100–240V" — if listed, only an adapter is needed.
Which countries use Type G plugs?
Type G plugs (3 rectangular pins) are used in the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, and several other countries.
Do I need an adapter travelling within Europe?
Most of continental Europe uses Type C or Type F plugs at 230V 50Hz, so you generally do not need an adapter when travelling between European countries. Always verify for your specific countries.
