My laptop is USB-C — do I still need a plug adapter abroad?
Since April 2026, every new laptop sold in the EU must charge via USB-C. Many travellers now assume that means charging is sorted worldwide. It isn't — and here's the crucial bit they're missing. On 28 April 2026, a new EU rule came into force requiring all laptops sold in the European Union to support charging via USB-C using the USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) standard. The same rule had already applied to phones and tablets since late 2024.
This is genuinely useful legislation. It means you can leave your laptop's proprietary charger at home and use a single compact GaN charger to power your phone, tablet, and laptop off the same brick. For travellers, that's fewer cables and a lighter bag.
But the law covers how power is delivered to your laptop — not which socket shape your charger plug fits. Those are entirely separate problems, and only one of them is solved.
What didn't change: The UK still uses Type G sockets (three rectangular pins). Europe uses Type C/E/F (two round pins). Australia uses Type I (angled flat pins). None of those accept a North American Type A/B plug — adapter or not.
USB-C is a power standard, not a socket standard
It helps to understand what USB-C actually is. It's a connector specification — a small oval port — that carries data and power over a single cable. USB Power Delivery is the protocol that negotiates how much power flows: your charger and device communicate and agree on the right voltage and wattage for a safe, fast charge.
What USB-C does not do is redesign the wall. The wall socket in London is a three-pin Type G. The one in Paris is a two-pin Type E. The one in Tokyo is a flat two-pin Type A. Your USB-C charger — wherever it was sold — has a plug on its wall end. That plug has a shape. If the shape doesn't match the socket, it doesn't fit.
A plug adapter sits between the charger plug and the foreign socket, bridging the gap mechanically. No electricity is changed. No conversion happens. It's a shape translator, nothing more. And USB-C doesn't make it redundant.

A charger rated below your laptop's requirement won't damage the laptop — it will charge slowly or only maintain battery level under load. A charger rated above the requirement is fine; the laptop draws only what it needs.
Does USB-C mean you don't need a voltage converter?
