China to UK plug adapter guide
Type G sockets throughout the UK, 230V power, and what Chinese travellers need to pack. Travelling from China to the UK, you need a plug adapter — neither Chinese Type A nor Type I plugs fit UK Type G sockets. Voltage is nearly identical (220V vs 230V), so most devices only need the adapter, not a converter.Quick answer Plug: The UK uses Type G (three rectangular pins). Chinese Type A and I plugs do not fit — an adapter is required. Voltage: China is 220V; the UK is 230V. The difference is small — most devices handle it without a converter. Frequency: Both China and the UK use 50Hz — no frequency issue.

What plug adapter do I need from China to the UK?
The UK uses Type G sockets exclusively — three large rectangular pins in a triangular arrangement with a safety shutter. No Chinese plug (Type A or Type I) fits a UK socket without an adapter.
What you need is a Type A/I to Type G adapter, or a universal adapter that includes a UK Type G output. These are widely available online and at Chinese airports before departure.
Important things to know about UK sockets:
- Safety shutters — UK sockets have spring-loaded shutters that only open when all three pins are inserted simultaneously. You cannot force a foreign plug in without an adapter.
- Fused plugs — UK Type G plugs have a fuse inside. Your adapter handles this — you do not need to worry about it.
- No multi-standard sockets — unlike China, UK buildings use only Type G. There is no shortcut here — you need a proper adapter.
Do I need a voltage converter for the UK?
Almost certainly not. China runs on 220V and the UK on 230V — a difference of only 10V, well within the operating tolerance of all modern electronics. In practice this is the same voltage.
All devices rated INPUT: 100–240V (which includes virtually every modern phone charger, laptop, and camera charger) handle this automatically. Even Chinese devices designed specifically for 220V operate safely on UK 230V without a converter.
A voltage converter is only needed for very sensitive specialised equipment — most Chinese travellers to the UK need only a plug adapter.
What if I forget my adapter?
Type G adapters are easy to find in the UK. Heathrow, Gatwick, and other major airports all have electronics or travel accessories shops airside. High street stores (Boots, WHSmith, Argos) stock them. Hotel front desks in tourist areas often have adapters to lend. Prices are typically £5–12 at airports, less in high street shops.

Do Chinese phone chargers work in the UK?
Yes — virtually all modern Chinese phone and laptop chargers are dual voltage (INPUT: 100–240V). The voltage difference between China 220V and UK 230V is negligible. You need only a plug adapter to convert your Type A or Type I plug to UK Type G.
Can I buy a Type G adapter at a UK airport?
Yes. All major UK airports have travel accessories or electronics shops in the departure and arrival halls. Heathrow Terminal 3 and 5, Gatwick South Terminal, and Manchester Airport all stock Type G adapters. Expect to pay a small premium versus buying before leaving China.
