The world uses 15 distinct plug types — labelled A through O. Whether you need an adapter comes down to one question: does your home country's plug shape match the socket shape at your destination?

If yes — no adapter needed. If no — you need one.

That's it. The adapter itself is just a mechanical connector that lets your plug fit into a differently shaped socket. It contains no electronics and changes nothing about the electricity.

Do you also need a voltage converter?

A plug adapter changes the socket shape. It does not change the voltage. These are two separate questions.

To find out if you also need a voltage converter, look at the label on your device or charger. It will show the input voltage range:

Input: 100–240V — dual-voltage. Works anywhere in the world. Only need an adapter for the socket shape.

Input: 120V only — North American single-voltage device. Will be damaged by 220–240V. Need a step-down converter plus adapter.

Input: 220–240V only — international single-voltage. Will not work at 120V. Need a step-up converter plus adapter.

The good news: most modern consumer electronics are dual-voltage. Phone chargers, laptop bricks, camera chargers, and USB-C GaN adapters almost always read 100–240V. The exceptions are typically older appliances with motors or heating elements — hair dryers, curling irons, and some electric shavers.

What if I only use USB-C devices?

USB-C is a cable standard, not a power standard — it doesn't bypass the need for a wall socket. If your charger has a plug that goes into the wall, that plug still needs to match the socket shape at your destination.

However, travelling with USB-C devices does simplify things considerably:

  • Modern GaN USB-C wall chargers are universally dual-voltage (100–240V), so voltage is never an issue
  • A single multi-port USB-C GaN adapter — paired with one universal plug adapter — can charge your phone, laptop, earbuds, and camera simultaneously
  • If you carry a USB-C power bank, you can skip the wall adapter entirely for short periods

Universal adapter vs destination-specific adapter

Once you know you need an adapter, the next choice is which kind to buy.

Country-specific adapters cover one plug-type conversion only — for example, US to UK (Type A/B to Type G). They are small, cheap ($3–8), and reliable. If you always travel to the same region, these are the practical choice.

Universal adapters pack multiple socket types into one unit, typically covering Type A, C, G, and I — which gets you through North America, the UK, Europe, Australia, and most of Asia. They cost more ($15–40) but replace four or five individual adapters. Most modern universal adapters also include USB-A and USB-C charging ports.

One thing universal adapters almost never include: Type D (India, Nepal, Sri Lanka) and Type M (South Africa). If your trip includes those destinations, check the adapter specs carefully or pack a separate dedicated adapter.
