What is a plug adapter — and what it doesn't do
A plug adapter is a purely mechanical device. It has the shape of one country's plug on one side and the socket shape of another on the other. You insert your plug into it — it then fits into the foreign socket. That's the entire function.
What it does not do: change the electrical voltage or frequency. The power that comes out of the wall passes through the adapter unchanged. A European 230V socket with an adapter fitted is still a 230V socket.
This is the most important thing to understand before plugging anything in abroad. The adapter solves the shape problem. It does not solve the voltage problem. For most modern electronics, there is no voltage problem — but for some appliances, there is.

The world's plug types — A through O
The IEC defines 15 plug types used worldwide. You don't need to memorise all of them — but knowing the major ones covers 98% of trips.

Voltage and frequency — the other half of the equation
The world's electrical systems run at two main voltage levels:
- 110–127V / 60Hz — North America, parts of Central America, Japan (100V)
- 220–240V / 50Hz — Europe, UK, Australia, most of Asia, Africa, South America
To find out if your device handles both, check its label or the text moulded into the charger body:
Input: 120V — North American single-voltage. Will be damaged by 220–240V. Needs a step-down converter.
Input: 220–240V — international single-voltage. Won't work at 110–120V. Needs a step-up converter.
The good news: phone chargers, laptop power bricks, camera chargers, and USB-C GaN adapters are virtually always rated 100–240V. The main exceptions are hair dryers, curling irons, and some electric shavers with heating elements or motors.

Do you need a plug adapter for your trip?
Not every international trip requires an adapter. If the destination country uses the same socket type as your home country, your plugs fit directly.
Trips that typically don't need an adapter: US/Canada ↔ Mexico or Japan (Type A), UK → Ireland/Singapore/Hong Kong (Type G), Australia ↔ New Zealand (Type I), most of Europe ↔ most of Europe (Type C/E/F compatible).
Trips that always need an adapter: US/Canada → UK, Europe, Australia, India; UK → Europe, US, Australia; Australia → UK, Europe, US.

Choosing the right adapter
There are two main approaches:
Country-specific adapters cover one plug-type conversion only — small, cheap ($3–8), and reliable. Best for travellers who always visit the same region. The downside: you need a different one for each region.
Universal adapters pack multiple socket types into one unit, typically covering Types A, C/E/F, G, and I. They cost more ($15–40) but replace four or five individual adapters. Most include USB-A and USB-C charging ports. Two caveats: many don't cover Type D (India) or Type M (South Africa), and they can be bulkier than dedicated adapters.
The cleanest travel kit for most people: one universal adapter + one GaN multi-port USB-C charger. The GaN charger is dual-voltage, charges everything via USB-C, and the universal adapter gives it a socket in any country.
Special devices and edge cases
Hair dryers and heated styling tools — The highest-risk item most travellers pack. Most hotel-grade hair dryers are single-voltage (120V or 220V only). Connecting a 120V hair dryer to a 220–240V socket with only a plug adapter will destroy it immediately. Always check the label. USB-C laptops — USB-C is a cable standard, not a power standard. Your USB-C laptop still needs its charger's wall plug to fit the local socket. The good news: virtually all USB-C laptop chargers are rated 100–240V, so you only need the shape adapter.

Power banks on flights — Lithium battery regulations have tightened. Power banks above 100Wh require airline approval; above 160Wh are banned from passenger aircraft entirely. Check your bank's Wh rating before packing it in carry-on.

Japan's 100V — Japan runs at 100V, the lowest in the world. Most modern dual-voltage devices handle it fine (their range starts at 100V), but older or budget electronics may not reach full performance. Always verify the device label starts at 100V, not 110V.
